8 Ways To Bring Joy to Yourself and Others During Circuit Breaker

At such a stressful time, with so much change and uncertainty, combined with the pressures of the Circuit Breaker during this pandemic, it almost seems like too much for women like ourselves who are already juggling the roles of the boss, employee, spouse, mum, daughter and more. It is therefore, very important to take even better care of your emotional, physical and mental health during this time so that you can continue to care for your loved ones.

Rose of Sharon has compiled a list of 6 self-care steps for you to navigate this pandemic.

1. Acknowledge the current situation and embrace your inner self

Social distancing and the loss of work and/or routine; on top of kids staying away from school are tremendous pressures, both physically and psychologically.  Many people are struggling to work full-time remotely while simultaneously caring full-time for their family and juggling the children’s Home-Based Learning at home. It is important to acknowledge the disruption, mourn your losses, listen to what your body and mind wants. Give yourself the time and space to acknowledge your loss by creating “shut down” time in your daily schedule, be it for meditation or solitude, embrace your sadness, listen to your inner voice, encourage yourself and then move on. This can help you stay grounded with the current state of life.

2. Get enough Sleep

Sleep can have a huge effect on how you feel both emotionally and physically. Not getting enough can cause major health issues and we need a certain amount of sleep to function at our best ability. But stress and other distractions can wreak havoc on your sleep. Reducing stress is also key. If you are feeling stressed out, think about the best ways to calm yourself after a hard day or relax more while on the job. Make sure your bedroom is the best possible place for you to get good sleep. It should be free of distractions such as a television, laptop, cellphone, etc, from waking you up too early in the mornings.

3. Put Your Mental Health First

If you truly want to understand how to take care of yourself as a woman, take a mental health day, vent to a friend, spend some time alone to reflect on yourself to help you to ponder the best ways to move forward in your life and keep you grounded. Do whatever you have to do. No one should make you feel ashamed for having normal feelings and needing a break.

4. Make Time For Hobbies or Socialising

I know you are busy. We all are. However, make sure you are carving out some time for the things you love to do. Do everything you can do to enjoy every minute and this will make you happy. Reading, painting, cooking, whatever it may be, don’t put it on the back burner. Self-care is about more than health, it is about your overall wellbeing! Try a different way of connecting with friends and colleagues —a Skype video call, or Zoom meeting over a meal, keep your social life active even without leaving home.

5. Eat Well

In times such as these, nutrition and healthy eating can easily be overlooked, However, if anything, it is more important than ever to have a balanced and nutritional diet. With increased physical and mental stress, healthy eating is vital to boost our immunity during this time.

6. Get Moving

With reduced time commuting, driving our kids around, and doing errands, its easy to forget about moving your body. You could consider using the extra time to take a walk or do some exercise at home. Even housework can be a way to be physically active. Daily goals like taking a walk alone before sitting in front of your computer or a quick brisk walk alone during lunch break not only make you fitter but also more mentally alert.

7. Get Dressed Up

Whether you have a date night at home or just heading to the supermarket, get dressed up. It is nice to put makeup on, style your hair, and try on your best outfit. The confidence that getting dolled up gives you should not be ignored. It also gets you in the right mood for starting work and ready for any Zoom meetings anytime of the day. 8. Bring Joy to Others

Learning how to take care of yourself includes taking care of other women. During this time, it’s important to reach out to your coworkers, girlfriends, and especially your elderly neighbours who might be living alone. A simple text or phone call could do wonders, especially to those who are lonely or need a helping hand. You can also consider sending a beautiful dress to your mum, bestie or sister to cheer them up and let them look forward to their first outing after the Circuit Breaker period! Women do their best together.
